Beate Gütshow's Non-Existent Landscapes and Cityscapes

Today I saw a picture by Beate Gütshow (1970) at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. She creates rather big and beautiful images in a style we know from e.g. Lewi Baltz and Bernd and Hilla Becher. These images provide an organized view of reality that provides comfort to the mind. However, with Beate Gütshow's images the observer's mind is being tricked to experience this comfort. Her pictures are digitally assembled and orchestrated. They cannot be found anywhere in the real world. With this knowledge the observer is left in a far more unsettling state. What is real, what isn't. What can be trusted, and what not.
