Johan Nieuwenhuize's Installation

Contribution to infocast.nl by Marcel Rademakers.

On Thursday, November 25 2010 the photographer Johan Nieuwenhuize (1980) was our guest teacher/speaker at the SKVR beeldfabriek - fotowerkplaats (image factory - photoworkshop) in Rotterdam. The story about his work was very interesting. Particularly inspiring was the manner in which he looks at exhibiting the works from his project Made in China, which he executed in China at the Tree Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing). Made in China was exhibited at gallery ‘van Kranendonk’ and at ‘Art Rottedam 2010’. It is the whole installation rather than the individual photographs that conveys the message. Johan Niewenhuize spends a lot of time deciding on the dimensions and placement of all the individual photographs in relation to the available space and to each other. In order to capture the final installation properly he created a scale model (scale 1:10). During the session at the SKVR beeldfabriek - fotowerkplaats he presented the scale model to his students (see image below). A book about the Made in China project will be published in April.
